The Sandlot is a funny, likeable summer sleeper -- half
"Wonder Years" and half The Bad News Bears, with an
undertone of Stephen King-type menace to keep things from
getting too gooey. It's about a group of nine young ballplayers
whose games are sometimes cut short when their baseball is hit
over the left-field fence into Mr. Mertle's junk yard. The yard
is guarded by "the beast," a mostly unseen creature so scary
that . . . Well, let's just say that no Mertle ball has ever
been retrieved. Legend has it that a kid once went over the
fence to get one and was (gulp) never seen again. With Karen
Allen, Denis Leary, Mike Vitar, and a cameo by James Earl
