SYDNEY, Australia - The web of nuclear weapons and secret agents that sent
Mordechai Vanunu to prison in Israel is to be the subject of a feature film,
Secret Weapon.
"It's the story of a guy who does something terribly dangerous, puts
himself at risk for moral reasons and gets seduced, kidnaped and imprisoned as
a result," writer and producer Nick Evans said from the film's location
shooting site in Sydney.
Vanunu, a former nuclear technician at Israel's top secret Dimona nuclear
reactor, is serving 18 years in jail for making public Israel's alleged atomic
secrets.
The film stars Griffin Dunne as Vanunu and Karen Allen as an Israeli
intelligence agent.
Vanunu decided to take a stand on peace issues and reveal what he knew
about Israel's nuclear capacity. He traveled to London with journalist Peter
Hounam of Britain's Sunday Times to tell about his experiences at Dimona.
In September of 1986, a woman Mossad intelligence agent lured Vanunu to
Rome where he was abducted and spirited back to Israel, the Sunday Times later
reported. He was found guilty of espionage and treason.
Vanunu's story "is a good story about the truth and how it gets out,"
director Ian Sharpe said.
